Self portrait by Trudy barber

March 2025 – Live sketching session with Trudy Barber

Our live sketching session takes place at the Trinity Church Hall, Fareham on Thursday 27th March. Doors open from 7pm. The demonstration is free for art group members, but there is a £3 admission fee for guests

In this session Trudy will give a demonstration of her portrait drawing technique, using pencil and charcoals/pastels on paper. Her partner, Ed will be the subject for the evening – so come prepared for a fun session with your own favourite drawing implements and sketch books to have a go!

Portsmouth based artist, Trudy combines both her arts practice and lecturing in digital culture at the city’s university. Having studied graphic design and illustration at Salisbury College of art in the 1970s she went on to be artist in residence at Fawley Power Station, Hampshire Health Authority at Winchester, Morphology Laboratories at Southampton University and Southampton University Hospital Asthma Research Centre in the 1980s. Trudy gained a BA (Hons ) in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art in London early in the 1990’s where she started exploring notions of the body in Virtual Reality and digital space. She took this interest into academia and gained her PhD in digital culture in 2005 from the University of Kent at Canterbury.

Trudy has always created figurative art alongside her academic work, exhibiting in the UK and lecturing world wide. She was selected to participate in the very first series of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the year, and teaches drawing and creative skills in both the community and at her university. Trudy now feels she is entering a new phase of creativity by returning to some of her earlier passions – figurative drawing and painting.
